YS Falls is a nature-based attraction and the name of an estate near Middle Quarters, Jamaica.

YS Falls in St. Elizabeth Parish--about an hour from Negril--is surrounded by beautiful countryside on Jamaica’s underdeveloped South Coast. Admission: (US$13 adults, US$6.40 4-14 years) Hours: 9:30am-3:30pm Tues-Sun In my opinion, it is the best waterfalls destination in Jamaica. After rain in the mountains the river swells and makes for some great tubing (US$6).

Hike 120 feet to the top of one of the island’s most breathtaking waterfalls. The water thunders down seven levels and cascades into natural pools. Traveling through the estate you’ll see Jamaican Red Poll cattle and thoroughbred race horses at pasture. This estate is privately owned and fully operational. The same family has owned it for over 110 years.

Some areas of the falls are rocky and not suitable for swimming. Lifeguards are on site to indicate which areas are safe.

If you like excitement, try the newly installed zipline over the falls (US$30 for the first run and US$10 for additional runs). The zipline is operated by Chukka Caribbean Adventures and the most exciting of their three ziplines in Jamaica.

To experience the falls you’ll need to be a good swimmer, but non-swimmers and children will enjoy the calm natural swimming pool, just eblow the falls, fed by underground and above ground springs.

Most tours of the Falls will take you through the historical town of Black River. On High Street you’ll see a fine display of classic Georgian architecture. These homes are more than 100 years old and accented with gabled fretwork.

On the way back from Middle Quarters, you’ll pass some colorful roadside vendors. Don’t miss the chance to stop taste the bags of freshly prepared bright-pink, spicy pepper shrimp. They are seasoned with freshly pounded spicy hot Scotch Bonnet peppers and pepper, then boiled in salt water. YUM! Don’t forget--Jamaican’s love to talk about their country--ask about their families--and enjoy this tongue-searing delicacy!
